TWK Assegaai 3-in-1 Marathon

Jessica Burns

On Saturday morning the 23rd of April this yearly highlight on the calendar for fitness enthusiasts took place and it was most enjoyable. The race started at 06:00 for all three categories (10 km, 21,1 km, and 42,2 km).

The previous marathon was last held in February of 2020 due to Covid. Runners were pleased to be able to participate again and came from all over. Participants from Vryheid, Pongola, Volksrust, Ermelo and Middelburg attended. There were also visitors from Swaziland, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal present.

The total entries were 457 and the total finishers according to the timekeepers were 382. Some runners did unfortunately not reach the halfway point before the cutoff time of three hours for the 42,2 km race.

Businesses that had the best water points (only the 42,2 km athletes could vote for the best water point) were Charka who came in first, Piet Retief Wheelers in second, and the SAPS in third place. Well done to all of you!

Overall, the day was a huge success. It would not have been possible without the sponsors, coordinators, and volunteers. The Assegaai Marathon Club would like to thank TWK (for sponsoring the race shirts and water bottles), the N2 Woodhill Centre (for the goodie bags and sunscreen), and M&R Oil and Diesel Depot (who sponsored the lip balm for the goodie bags). To every business that managed a water point, you did your utmost to keep the spirits high, and thanks for keeping every participant hydrated.

Well done to the Assegaai Marathon Club for organising such an outstanding event!
