Between Monday 16 August and Sunday 22 August, one person died, four people were left with critical injuries, 12 people sustained serious injuries and 4 were treated for minor injuries during accidents in the Mkhondo area.
On Monday 16 August at approximately 08:00, the driver of a red Isuzu who was travelling towards Paulpietersburg wanted to turn right onto a gravel road when the driver of a grey Volkswagen who was travelling in the opposite direction crashed into him at the moment that he was turning. It is unclear who was at fault since it was misty and both drivers’ sight was impaired. Two people were critically injured and two were treated for serious injuries.
On Saturday 21 August one person sustained serious injuries and two were treated for minor injuries during an accident on the Ermelo road at about 06:30. The driver of a silver Volkswagen supposedly did not see a sharp bend in the road due to thick mist and drove off the road.
Another accident occurred on Saturday, near the Houdkop Border Post but, according to the report supplied by the Mkhondo Fire and Rescue Unit, no further information could be disclosed at the moment, due to the fact that there is an ongoing investigation.
One person died after being involved in an accident on the Ermelo road on Sunday 22 August at approximately 05:55. The driver of a blue Volkswagen was apparently driving towards Ermelo when he strayed from his lane and collided with a white UD truck that was travelling in the opposite direction.
Five minutes after the previous accident, the driver of a white truck (make unknown) apparently turned out of the truck stop and onto the N2 Ermelo road in the Piet Retief direction. The driver of a white Toyota taxi who was on his way to Piet Retief did not see the truck and collided with it. The driver of a silver Toyota who was also travelling towards Piet Retief did not see the accident due to thick fog and also crashed into the white truck. Two people sustained critical injuries and another five were treated for minor injuries.
The Fire and Rescue Unit warns that the part of the road where the accident occurred (just outside of town where the road has recently been resurfaced) is extremely dangerous in foggy weather conditions. The white and yellow lines of this part of the road have not been repainted which makes it easy to deviate from your lane. Motorists are urged to be extra careful when driving there.
On Sunday 22 August at about 11:30, the driver of a white Kia lost control on the Ermelo road, which caused the vehicle to roll. The reason for the driver losing control is unknown but, it resulted in serious injuries for three people.
Also on Sunday, at about 18:00, the driver of a red Volkswagen drove through a pothole on the Lüneburg road and lost control which caused him to crash into an embankment on the side of the road. Two people were injured.
