A COSATU strike began on Wednesday morning 7 October at approximately 09:50. Members of COSATU gathered in front of Mall@Mfula at the Brand Street entrance to protest.
They were demonstrating against the exploitation of workers, corruption, gender-based violence and other socio-economic issues.
Brand Street, as well as a part of Kotze Street was closed to motorists.
The Mkhondo SAPS monitored the situation closely and members of the Mkhondo Traffic Department were directing traffic.
The group planned to walk to the Mkhondo SAPS Station when they were done at the mall and then proceed to travel to Normandien Farms, a few kilometres outside of town, on the N2-Ermelo road.
The COSATU strike was peaceful at the time of print and the demonstrators were simply singing and dancing in front of the mall’s entrance
More about the strike will be published in the next edition of the Excelsior News.
