On Monday 24 August a driver for a local trucking company experienced some mechanical issues with the truck and had to pull over to the side of the road, on the N2-Ermelo road at the Driefontein turnoff.
He called for assistance from the company’s mechanics and he waited in the truck. Approximately five minutes later, a car approached and parked at the rear of the truck. The driver thought that it was the mechanic but, since he was still not certain, he remained seated in the truck.
The driver said that one man sneaked towards the truck and then forcefully threw a stone at the left side window, breaking it. More men appeared and started throwing rocks at the truck. At that stage, the driver knew that his life was in danger and got out of the truck and ran into a nearby field. As he ran away, one of the assailants pulled out a firearm and proceeded to shoot at him.
Fortunately, the driver escaped unharmed and after running away, the attackers left the scene. Various farmers in the area, as well as the Mkhondo SAPS were called to assist in tracking down the assailants. Unfortunately they were long gone, and still not traced.
We encourage all motorists to be vigilant and to be aware of your surroundings at all times.
