On Tuesday 25 August the IUCMA (Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency) held a meeting in Amsterdam, with various stakeholders to discuss issues regarding the management of water resources.
The purpose of the meeting was to promote community participation in the protection, use, development, conservation, management and control of the water resources in its water management area.
Those present also discussed the quality of drinking water in the area, dam levels and the tariffs and pricing of water in Amsterdam and surroundings. It was concluded that the water quality on average is not bad but, there were areas of which results were concerning. In some residential areas the water quality is being affected by high E. coli levels, especially areas surrounding the Assegaai and Hlelo Rivers.
Thank you to everyone who was present for trying o make a positive change in the quality of life for the residents of the Mkhondo area.
This group will have a meeting again in November to try and find practical solutions for the water situation, before it gets worse.
