The tragic death of a hero: Given Ngomane

On Friday night, at approximately 20:00, Given Ngomane, a member of the Mkhondo Fire and Rescue, and his team were on their way to attend to an accident on the N2 (Ermelo road) near Iswepe.

Given was driving the vehicle at the time and just before Wildrand, the driver of a black Mercedes that was travelling towards Piet Retief, attempted to overtake a truck and he collided head-on with the bakkie. The bakkie rolled several times.

Mr Ngomane was critically injured and immediately taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on the way there.

It is a big loss to the Fire and Rescue Unit. Given was described as a dedicated worker and a kind person. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and co-workers. He will surely be missed.

“When I am called to duty, God wherever flames may rage,

give me strength to save a life, whatever be its age.

Help me to embrace a little child before it’s too late,

or save an older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert to hear the weakest shout,

and quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,

to guard my neighbour and protect his property.

And if according to your will I have to lose my life,

bless with your protecting hand my loving family from strife.”– Firefighters Prayer

The abovementioned information was provided by Mr Robert Kubheka of the Mkhondo Local Municipality communications office.
