Alcohol is legal again

What comes more naturally to South Africans than sitting next to a fire, braaing a piece of steak and enjoying an ice-cold beer or glass of wine with friends? Nothing!

On Monday, 1 June the nine-week ban on the sale of alcohol in South Africa was finally lifted and citizens rejoiced by streaming to liquor stores to fill up their long depleted cabinets.

South Africa is the only country in the world that had to give up their cigarettes and alcohol because of Covid-19, and many people believe that the reason behind these bans was more about corruption than keeping the citizens safe and healthy.

In eMkhondo, queues of approximately 30 people were in front of most stores. All individuals were required to adhere to social distancing protocols and to wear a mask. Their body temperature was checked before they were allowed to enter the shops.

Liquor outlets will only be allowed to operate from Monday to Thursday, between 09:00 and 17:00 and the government has requested that alcohol only be consumed in your own home.

Enjoy your beverages, but please have them responsibly!
