Big or small – soccer is for all

On Saturday, 24 August and Sunday, 25 August 46 soccer teams competed in the Mini Champions League which was held at the Piet Retief Rugby Club.

This tournament was a fundraiser for 17 year old Mohammed Omar, who has been chosen to attend a soccer academy in Leeds, England for two months; December 2019 – January 2020.

Teams from as far as Middelburg, Harrismith and Nelspruit came to Piet Retief to play in this league. Teams were divided into age groups and a winner for each age group was announced at the end of the tournament.

After two days of tough competition, the results were as follows:

Seniors – Build it Driefontein came in first and Young Barca of Nelspruit finished runners-up.

Over 40’s – The winning team was Young Barca of Nelspruit and in second place was H&F.

U/14’s – Piet Retief Sporting Club came in first in this age group and Middelburg FC were the runners-up.

U/11’s – Ermelo Sporting Club was victorious here and Young Barca of Nelspruit came in second.

In the U/9 category, each young star received a participation medal for playing their hearts out.

Mohammed Angamia of Wasted Talent FC was acknowledged for scoring the best goal during the tournament and Leo Stucky of Stucky Motors received the award for the most entertaining player of the tournament.

Along with very entertaining soccer matches, there were also stalls that sold delicious food and even entertainment for children, all to raise funds for Mohammed to be able to chase his dreams.

Thank you to each and every sponsor who made this fundraiser for this young boy possible, thank you also to everyone who travelled so far to play in the tournament.

This two month soccer academy in England is an expensive undertaking and more funds still need to be raised.
