On Tuesday, 25 June 2019, an ambulance accident took place when the grass was burning next to the N2 Ermelo road.
Before the bmbulance accident, necessary safety precautions were followed by placing workers next to the road, in front of the smoke cloud with flags, to warn drivers to adjust their speed according to the situation. This was to no avail as they allegedly ignored the warning signs and drove right into the smoke at their normal speed.
As they could not see through the thick smoke, the cars collided into one another. In total, 11 cars were involved in this accident. Luckily only one person sustained serious injuries.
Mr Anton Nortje, head of the Mkhondo Emergency Services, is requesting that road users please take extra care when driving during fire season. Pay attention to warning signs placed next to the road and have respect for the emergency services when they are on their way to the scene of an accident.
