Three copper cable suspects were arrested during an operation conducted by the Hawks, on Friday, 22 February, in connection with copper theft in Ermelo.
The cables were estimated at around R200 000 and was confiscated at a scrap yard where the suspects were apparently employed.
According to Mpumalanga News, the trio aged 21-years old and two suspects of 44- year old appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 February and they were remanded in custody. It is mentioned that the copper cables belonged to Transnet and the bakkie, which was used to transport the cables, was also seized.
The three suspects are apparently facing charges of possession of stolen property and they were set to appear in court again on Thursday, 28 February, for a formal bail application. During the early hours of Friday, 1 March, some areas in Mkhondo had a power outage due to copper cable theft.
It was mentioned that it was also cables of Transnet, but at time of publication, the case information was not yet made available and will be reported on once it is received from the local SAPS.
