On the 8th of February 2019, Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) invited its current bursary holders and the new intake of beneficiaries together with their relatives to its office complex in Ermelo to recognise outstanding results from its current beneficiaries and also to hand over new bursaries.
District Executive Mayor, Muzi Chirwa, has been an ambassador for education. In his remarks when engaging with the communities during the different forms of public participation; he has never missed an opportunity to encourage young people to pursue education.
This event has become a feature on the calendar of GSDM. During the SODA 2017/2018 financial year, Chirwa announced an improved and a more inclusive Bursary Scheme. The scheme was to make sure that at least one (1) learner from each of the District’s seven (7) local municipalities receive educational support through a bursary.
As per the Executive Mayor’s announcement the new intake was represented by recipients from all municipalities in the District in various fields of study. In an effort to improve the Bursary scheme, the district introduced a couple of initiatives such as making it easier for the students to communicate with the District regarding the bursary.
This has allowed the district to better monitor and support the beneficiaries and in return has seen an enhanced performance by the bursary holders. These well-performing individuals were also recognized and honoured at the event.
