News bulletins and articles are congested with news about farmers struggling to cope with the severe drought in some of the country’s provinces, while we, in the Mpumalanga region, are receiving good rains on a regular basis.
The photo accompanying this article needs no explanation as it is clear that this man is very thankful for the rain. The photo was taken in the Wakkerstroom area, where they also received good rainfall over the past weekend.
On Monday, 28 January, a spokesperson of the Mpumalanga region MFPA (Mkhondo Fire Prevention Association) stated that Mkhondo received an estimate of 15 mm rain over a seven day period. The following dam level statistics were made available by the Department of Water and Sanitation on Monday, 21 January:
- Heyshope dam – decreased from 80,4% to 79,8%
- Jericho dam – decreased from 66,9% to 66%
- Morgenstond dam – decreased from 65,2% to 64,6%
- Westoe dam – increased with 0,1% from 52,7% to 52,8%
It seems that our local dams have decreased slightly and one could only hope for more good rain showers during the last few months of summer.
