Now that he is no longer with us, let us continue his legacy in honor of the life he lived. That is what made Mike so great. His complete, unconditional love for his family. Michael treated every person with the utmost respect and kindness. Mike was a very special person and a true leader. Mike’s leadership abilities started in his school days.

Mike was an officer in the Commando’s and held the rank of Captain. According to records from the company archive, Mike joined Newington Timber Co (Timber and Saw Milling) on 1 July, 1961. The business was owned by Mr J C Matthews. Mike worked himself up.

After several promotions he became Manager of Newington on 1 July, 1966. Suiderland development Corporation bought the business from Mr J C Matthews. Mike was appointed as Managing Director of Bosbou Belegging, (a Timber and Sawmill company) and Mike played a very important role in the acquisition of Charka. Mike held the position as Managing Director for just over 38 years until he retired on 31 August 2008. Mike built Charka Briketts into a leading brand.

Mike was not only respected in the business environment, but he also enjoyed the respect of the Piet Retief community where he resided until his passing. An intimate memorial service to celebrate the life of Michael was held at the Saint Martin’s- In-The-Veld Anglican Church, Rosebank, Johannesburg by Reverent Brian Germond on Wednesday, 2 January 2019.

The family wish to express their sincerest gratitude and appreciation to every person that has given love and support during the time that their husband, dad, grandad and brother was in the intensive care unit in hospital and now during their time of grief and loss. A memorial Service will be held for Michael Mills in Piet Retief shortly. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. – Philippians 1:21”
