This year PRH had a team of eight runners who took part in the ASA Cross Country League.
At the Mpumalanga Championships, Carmen Klingenberg and Elizabeth Carr qualified and were chosen to represent Mpumalanga at the ASA Cross Country, which was held in Port Elizabeth. The day of the Cross Country SA’s in Port Elizabeth was wet and windy.
The course was very muddy and it was recommended that the athletes run barefoot in fear of their tekkies getting lost in the mud. Both Carmen and Elizabeth finished in the middle of their fields (each race consisted of approximately 80 girls) and both of them ran their personal best times.
They both enjoyed the experience immensely and encourage more athletes to try and take part next year.
Cross Country 2018
Piet Retief High School had a successful 2018 crosscountry season. We took part in the Schools Cross Country League and competed against 9 other high schools in the district.
The high school’s cross-country season consists of 4 league races and the Inter High. The best points earned from 3 of the leagues plus the points earned at Inter High are counted together to determine a league winner.
At the Inter High meeting there is also a competition for the best team of the day, as well as individual medals for the first three places. The Piet Retief High School girls teams did very well this year. Both the senior and junior girls teams finished third at Inter High. The senior girls also came third overall in the league.
The best individual performances at Inter high were: Elizabeth Carr (snr girls) – 3rd place and Kiana Cloete (jnr girls) – 6th place. For the boys junior team, Bertus Jansen van Vuuren came 13th at Inter High.
