Excellent performance Gert Sibande Chess League

On 30 July and 13 August, the chess teams from Piet Retief High School competed in the Gert Sibande Chess League 2018.

The winners of the league were only announced on Monday, 13 August, as the totals for the two competitions were added to determine the final results. The teams from Piet Retief High School performed excellently and received the following positions: The U/17-team won, with 33.5 points. This is a first for us and we must give a huge hand to Mr Johan Viviers who is coaching them.

The U/15-team came fifth in their section, with a final score of 28. The scores were very close It must be a huge motivation for them to do better next year, since the majority of the team will still be playing as a group next year. The B-team also played good quality chess, and were placed third overall with 22.5 points.

The following players didn’t lose a match during the whole tournament: Joshua Carr: Under 17, Hanno Viviers: Under 15 Johan Terblance: Under 15, Congratulations also to our neighbours: the U/19-team of Ndlela Secondary School came first in their section, with a final score of 16.5 and their under 17 team came fouth with a score of 29.

Congratulations to all the players who participated in the league and helped their teams achieve the above results. Not only the high level of chess played by the learners, but also their professional attitudes and well-mannered behaviour kept Piet Retief High School’s name in a positive light.
