Protest march on 3 April

Protest march on 3 ApriOn Tuesday, 3 April, the SACP (South African Communist Party) arranged a community march to deliver a memorandum about their grievances to a MEC (Member of the Executive Council), at the Mkhondo Local Municipality’s building.

The march started at 09:00 from the Mandla Magudulela Stadium in eThandukukhanya and proceeded to the municipal building to deliver the memorandum at around 11:00. The memorandum included their complaints with regard to property and a clinic in Ethandukukhanya, to name but a few.

There are also various rumours doing the rounds of other issues in the memorandum but the Excelsior News is not prepared to publish these, until confirmed. At around 12:00 on Tuesday, 3 April, the march was controlled by a strong police presence and the SAPS intervened by firing rubber bullets at the protestors that became violent.

The protestors then proceeded to eThanukukhanya where the entrance at the bridge was barricaded with burning tyres. It was also mentioned that they were planning to loot shops in eThandukukanya. More information about the content of the memorandum and the outcome of the march will be provided once it is received from the local SAPS’s Communication Department.

At the time of publication, the Communications Department of Mkhondo Local Municipality was not available for comment and their feedback will be published when received. Motorists and shop owners were urged to stay away from the area and to rather close their shops as no one was sure whether the protestors would become violent or not.l
