Personnel and children from Uzwelo Child and Youth Care Centre had the privilege to go on a spectacular holiday to Durban during the past school holidays.
In 2008, Uzwelo decided to raise funds so that traumatized children could have the opportunity to go on a seaside holiday where they can have fun and enjoy themselves. This year, Uzwelo had their fifth Durban holiday (held every second year) and it was truly an event that the children will cherish forever.
In many ways, events like these help children to keep a positive outlook on life and this experience has been life changing indeed for many of the children. A bus full of excited children and staff members left Piet Retief on Monday, the 3rd of April to start a week long holiday at the sea.
On Tuesday, they visited the Key Largo Spur, in Ballito for breakfast before they hit the ice rink. They also had the opportunity to take a boat cruise around Durban Harbour on the Hakuna Matata.
The children were in complete awe and enjoyed the scenery very much. On Wednesday, they spent the day watching a movie and visited the Magic Company’s games arcade and had a ball of a time! On Thursday, everyone was up bright and early because they were visiting uShaka Marine World for the day and were exhausted by the time they returned to their accommodation.
Due to the nationwide march on Friday, the 7th of April, they were not able to visit any places and enjoyed a lazy day. On Saturday, they had the opportunity to go and watch the Sharks vs the Jaguares where the Sharks won by 18 points to 13. On Sunday, they visited the beach and just enjoyed swimming and one could hear the laughter and see the joy on each child’s face.
On Monday, the 10th of April, it was time to return home but not without the most beautiful memories, locked away in each child’s heart. Uzwelo would like to thank every sponsor for their commitment and assistance to make this year’s Durban trip a raging success.
Without all the help received from the community of Piet Retief, this would have never become a reality and you are truly treasured and appreciated. Lastly, Uzwelo would also like to give praise to the Lord, because without Him, none of this would have ever been possible.
