Music revellers from different corners of Mpumalanga and various parts of Swaziland enjoyed a soulful weekend at the Mkhondo Easter Fiesta which took place from the 15th to the 16th of April 2017.
The festival was a first of its kind over the Easter weekend in the Mkhondo Local Municipal area, this year being its inaugural event. The main event organisers, Karabo Mthembu and Linda Hlatshwayo, who both run independent companies which specialise in various services, events management being the main speciality, were pleased with the support and participation from the Mkhondo community, proving that Mkhondo needs more similar events.
“Our vision for 2017 was to create an annual event that will see young people who work outside Mkhondo coming home over the Easter Weekend to enjoy a fun-filled environment where they can interact with peers they have not seen in ages. With Mkhondo being a small municipality, exposure to various industries is limited for many young people, hence we brought celebrities they see on television to our area thereby putting Mkhondo on the map,” said Linda Hlatshwayo.
In addition, she stated that this year was about realising the numbers and not the proceeds as yet, “we want to build the brand credibility so that the event can draw attention to sponsors as the brand gets recognised.”
This event has important economic spinoffs which are well needed by our “small dorpie”. 50 Temp jobs were created, tourism benefited local guesthouses. 4 Local artists were given a platform to showcase their talents and a few SMME’s bought a space to sell their products.
Making the event all in all beneficial to the community at large. Our small town is unique because it is centrally placed within the borders of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Swaziland and that is where the magic lies.
The itinerary for the weekend included the main festival on the 15th of April 2017 at the Piet Retief Rugby Stadium and a Sunday Soul Session at the Four Ways Car Wash in eThandukukhanya.
