TWK Assegaai Business Relay 2017 – There is nothing better than seeing an event grow from a seemingly inconspicuous idea to something that is almost a local institution.
The Assegaai Marathon Club’s annual Business Relay is such an event. Although this event has been well supported over the years it’s been presented, 2017 will certainly go down as a massive success. A whopping 65 teams entered for the event, which translates to 260 participants, which made for a wonderfully vibrant affair on Wednesday, 8th of February 2017.
With the threatening clouds in the background, everyone was concerned that it might rain, and even though the second & third legs had to do a bit of running in the rain, the weather turned out to be perfect. And it certainly helped to cool down the runners who were all giving their best. What is always great to see at this particular event, is the variety of participants; we had fast runners, sprinters, walkers, social runners, young runners and more mature athletes. It really is an event that anyone can take part in.
TWK, as our partner for this event, entered a record number of 8 teams, and the sea of blue shirts were hard to miss. Overall we had very good support from local businesses, with teams from Spur, Supa Quick, ES CHem, Foodpak, Charka, HPT and Montigny, to name but a few competing. Our local schools also did their part, with teams from Piet Retief High School, Maranatha and Rinkel- Krinkel taking part as well.
One of our beneficiaries even entered a team, and it was great to see the boys of Uzwelo taking part. Winners of the categories were as follows: Men’s Team: Auto Top Three Panelbeaters, 44:19 Ladies Team: Piet Retief High School, 61:30 Mixed Team: Piet Retief High School, 55:35 Kiddies Team: Foodpak The supporters also helped to create a festive vibe and the teams of Maranatha, Rinkel- Krinkel and Spur really kept the spirits high, even in the rain.
Spur’s team, in the end, walked away with the spirit trophy – well done guys! The Assegaai Marathon Club would like to thank every team that took part in the event, and all our volunteers who helped make it such a great event. Through the event the club raised R12 000-00 for Huis Immergroen and Uzwelo Home, and in the coming weeks we will arrange to do the official handover to each of these organisations.
The event has become a bit of a warm-up for our annual marathon, which this year, will take place on the 18th of February. We hope to see many of the faces there as well, doing either one of our 3 main distances, or even just taking part in our 4km Fun Run. Laat waai Assegaai!
