Executive Mayor hands over School Uniforms to Schools. Disadvantaged learners from Umfudlala Combined School in Witbank Farm near Davel and Thwahlele Primary School in Sheepmoor, were all smiles on Friday, 3 February.

Gert Sibande District Municipality’s leadership, led by Executive Mayor, Councillor Muzi Chirwa, presented them with school uniform. Learners who were handed out new school uniform could not hide their excitement. Councillor Chirwa was accompanied by members of the Mayoral Committee at both schools during the handover.

The priority, he said, is to visit rural and farm schools to make sure government takes good care of them. He said: “We are gathered here today because of the importance of education. You all know that the ANC-led government has a priority towards education, which means all of us at the different levels of governance, we must priorities education.

As a District our role is to support. We are here today because of the District’s ‘back to school campaign’ which takes place every year when schools re-open.” He continued by saying: “This year we have decided to take this campaign to rural and farm schools. Our main focus is to support child-headed families where parents are no more and again where parents are unable to buy a school uniform.

“We are doing this because we believe that every child has a potential to succeed. We want all of you to succeed.” When Councillor Chirwa said this he received applause from both learners and teachers. He also reminded learners that their backgrounds should not determine who they are or what they want to achieve in life. He said he was a perfect example of what needs to be done to achieve.

“I once attended a farm school myself when I was your age. But today I am heading a District Municipality that has seven Municipalities. “So I want to tell you all that you will become politicians, engineers, scientists or any other profession if you take your schooling seriously,” said the Executive Mayor. He added: “Nelson Mandela once said: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

“We are all created to succeed. The only thing that we need is opportunities. We want to say to you today to work hard, study hard and Gert Sibande District has bursaries for those who excel in their studies. Our bursaries are paying for everything, all we need from you is to pass and take your education seriously.

“Lastly I want to plead to parents, support your children in order for them to pass. To teachers, we have seen your hard work, continue with it. Principal, only good leaders succeed. Circuit manager, support these rural and farm schools for the nation to succeed.”

He then left them with another powerful quote from Malala Yousafzai who once said: “Let us make our future now, and let us make our dreams tomorrow’s reality.” Councillor Chirwa also added:

Malala also said: ‘“We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced. One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world. When the world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful’.” Issued by Gert Sibande District Municipality’s Communications Section.
