UROC Festive Season News

The staff members and volunteers at UROC (Uzwelo Rural Orphan Care) were very busy during the Festive Season, taking part in a Feeding Scheme, joining a Christmas Outreach with Mondi Ltd. as well as hosting a choir competition in Iswepe.

During the course of 2016, community members, staff from UROC as well as volunteers gathered food donations in aid of a Feeding Scheme, which is hosted in nine different villages throughout the Mhkondo region.

During the December holidays, an estimate of 900 children were fed, throughout all nine villages! The UROC Feeding Scheme is planning on continuing with the initiative by visiting the villages over weekends as well as school holidays during 2017.

Iswepe Village walked away with a cash prize of R1 500-00 during the choir competition

On the 7th and 8th of December, UROC joined forces with Mondi Ltd. for a Christmas Outreach program where over 400 gifts were handed out to children in nine different villages surrounding Mkhondo. The gifts mainly included stationery needed for school and school shoes. This outreach has been running for about five consecutive years and the organisers are pleased with the outcome thereof.

Members from UROC organised a choir competition which was held at the Iswepe Hall on the 16th of December. All nine villages participated in the event and each village had the opportunity to sing three to four songs. Iswepe Village walked away with a cash prize of R1 500-00. In second place, winning a R1 000-00 cash prize, was the Sandspruit Village and the third place went to Watersmith Village, winning a R750-00 cash prize.

UROC members and volunteers wish to thank everyone involved in making their programme for the Festive Season a huge success! Thank you to Jaco and Caren Potgieter from Welverdiend Forestry for their sponsorship and to the personnel from Mondi Ltd. for making the Christmas Outreach yet another success.
