It’s been a fantastic year for the Assegaai Marathon Club, and on Thursday, 10 November, the club held its Annual General Meeting, Year End function and prize-giving ceremony.
Although it was a rainy evening, about 40 club members, including representatives from our main sponsor, TWK Agri, attended the meeting which was held at the cafeteria of the Piet Retief High School. First order of business was the review of the year gone by and it was great to see that the club had not only grown in membership, but financially the club looked strong in the wake of a very successful marathon, trail run and no less than 9 fun runs held throughout the year.
The year end function was also the opportunity to award prizes to deserving members, and this year the titles were awarded as follows: Male Club Member of 2016: Werner Peters Female Club Member of 2016: Laiken Pretorius Male & Female Club member awards were based on commitment in the time trials, club involvement & race distances covered throughout the year.
Highest Race Mileage of 2016:Tessie Lundie (476 kms) Hans-Walter Boshoff Memorial Trophy (For first club member in the Comrades Marathon): Richard Nhlabathini Chairperson’s Award: Vince Aslett & Anné Nieuwenhuizen (for marketing of the club)
After the prizegiving there was a lucky draw in which one male & female club member could each win a pair of Asics running shoes, sponsored by Runaway Sport in Pretoria.
With great excitement the winning numbers were drawn, and Leonie Vink & Chris Stander walked (ran?) away with the prizes which will surely kick-start their 2017 training. Upon completion of the formalities club members could enjoy a meal together, with a Buildyour- own-Burger station, while getting to know each other better and planning for next year’s running calendar.
The club looks forward to another good year, as planning are already underway for the 30th TWK Assegaai 3-in-1 Marathon, to be held on the 18th of February 2017. If you are interested in joining the club, or staying up to date with events, be sure to check out the club’s Facebook page (Assegaai Marathon Club).
There will be a kick-off meeting early in January so be sure to keep an eye out for details. Until 2017 – Laat Waai Assegaai!
