Piet Retief Rugby Club Through to the Finals – On Saturday, 25 June, the 1st team from Piet Retief took on Sentraal from Dundee in the semifinal.

Unfortunately the 2nd team did not play in the semifinal because Volksrust withdrew from the match. The 2nd team, however, got an automatic pass to the final because of the withdrawal by Volksrust. The second team will be playing against Vryheid to try and claim the top honours of winning the league.

The 1st team had to, however, win their way into the final. Saturday, 25 June, was a sunny day and the players were ready to take on the task ahead. The first half kicked off, with Piet Retief quickly running over for a try. The team played very well and managed another four tries in the first half. Sentraal also put their mark on the match by scoring a try of their own. The first half ended with a score of 34-5 in Piet Retief’s favour.

The second half started with Sentraal on the charge, managing to score two tries. Piet Retief had a quiet second half but still scored another try. Sentraal tried their best to get back into the game but it was just not enough. The match ended with Piet Retief winning 41-19. Tries were scored by Tinus Taljaard (2), Ray van der Lith (3) and Armand Fourie.

Jaco Botha converted four tries and Andries Pienaar managed a drop goal. Man of the match for the forwards was Armand Fourie and Ray van der Lith was man of the match for the backs. The final will be on Saturday, 2 July 2016. Both the teams from Piet Retief will be playing against Vryheid in the final, in Vryheid. The 2nd team will kick off at 14:00, followed by the 1st team at 15:30. Photos by Vince Aslett
