The community of Dirkiesdorp, or rather KwaNgema, protested during the course of last week – they are dissatisfied about irregular election methods.
Excelsior News stated in last week’s newspaper that Piet Retief Primary School had to cancel their sports day due to the same protests in the Dirkiesdorp area. The community of KwaNgema, however, decided to go ahead with the protests on the 7th and 8th of June 2016. According to Capt. Bloze from the SAPS in Dirkiesdorp, it was a planned protest of which they were aware.
The SAPS sent a spokesperson to meet with the community on the 10th of June 2016 to discuss the community member’s grievances. Unfortunately, the members from KwaNgema was not satisfied with the outcome of the meeting. However, they agreed to stop all protests until after the elections on the 3rd of August 2016.
An office bearer (from the election offices) will meet with the community again and decide on how to handle the situation from thereon. Fortunately, there were no injuries or damages reported during the ongoing protests and everything is at peace for the moment. The SAPS in Dirkiesdorp informed us that they will give us more feedback after the elections.
