Chess Players off to Provincials

A total of 29 chess players from the Gert Sibande District, who took part in the final Gert Sibande Championships on Saturday, 21 May, qualified for the next round – the provincial championships.

As previously reported in the Excelsior News, the Gert Sibande Chess Championships for schools took place on 21 May.

Eight of the 29 chess players mentioned above, are from Mkhondo: Elizabeth Carr – girls U/15 (Piet Retief High School), Gift Mthimkhulu – boys U/ 15 (Ubuhlebuzile High School), Njabulo Mdluli – boys U/15 (Ubuhlebuzile High School) Buyumile Vilakazi – boys U/15 (Ndlela High School), Michelle Dedekind – girls U/18 (Piet Retief High School), Nombuyiselo Malinga – girls U/18 (Ndlela High School, Nththuko Mabaso – boys U/18 (Ndlela High School) and Sifisokuhle Dhlamini – boys U/18 (Ndlela High School) .

That makes four players from Ndlela High School, and two each from Ubuhlebuzile High School and Piet Retief High School. Well done and congratulations to all of you! These chess players will take part in the Mpumalanga Championships on 11 June. Good luck! It is said, tongue in the cheek, that chess is a game where, if you lose you think the person who beat you must be an extremely intelligent person and if you win you think you’re the best player ever …
