R55 Million Upgrade to Water Waste Treatment Plant

The honourable Mr B.H. Mtshali, executive mayor of Mkhondo officially opened the new and upgraded water waste treatment plant of Mkhondo on 3 May 2016.

In 2007 general manager of planning & development started a project to change Mkhondo. The Water Waste Treatment Plant planning started taking place to build and upgrade the current waste treatment plant to increase the capacity of the plant to be able to handle double the capacity. In 2012 the project started with civil construction to the upgraded plant. On 3 May 2016, the honourable B.H. Mtshali, executive mayor of the Mkhondo Municipality opened the new and upgraded water waste treatment plant of Mkhondo.

The Water Waste Treatment Plant has now been upgraded to be able to treat more than double the capacity that it used to treat. The capacity has now been upgraded from 4 mega (million) litre to 10 mega (million) litre. With the capacity upgraded the plant can now treat larger quantities on a daily basis. The increase in capacity also means that there is less chance of spillage. The plant is also now known to be a mega plant. The plant has been upgraded with new mechanics as well as new civil structures. The plant also has all new bio technology, which means that the water is now being treated more thoroughly than before. The plant now uses the bio technology to degrade waste in the water to purify it better.

The Water Waste Treatment Plant has been up and running since November 2015 and has been in the testing stages for a while. The water’s purification levels have increased by 100% since the plant has been up and running. The water is being tested daily to make sure that it complies with the green drop requirements. Currently the tested levels comply but will be at optimum value in more or less 3 months’ time. The honourable Mr B.H. Mtshali has stated that all funds allocated to Mkhondo Municipality the past few years, since 2007, has gone into the upgrading of the waste treatment plant.

Samples of water that is taken on a daily basis is sent to Gert Sibande Testing Centre where they have stated the plant in Mkhondo is one of the top plants in Mpumalanga. So it is with great pleasure that it can be said that we will be seeing a considerable change in water quality thanks to Mkhondo Municipality and the honourable mayor, Mr B.H. Mtshali.
