Recognising that the only way to fight the common challenge of fire is for stakeholders to unite across all fronts, Mondi hosted a Mondi Fire Open Day at the Mkhondo Fire Protection Association (FPA) grounds, on 22 April.
A lovely sunny day, filled with professionally conducted activities, started early and spirits seemed to be high among all. This year some senior learners from schools were invited to join in the day and watch the demonstrations and displays. Activities were focused on key areas such as fire awareness, fire prevention, investment in technology/equipment and the improvement of response times.
Major stakeholders involved in fire prevention and fire-fighting, displayed their equipment and demonstrated their area of expertise. The annual fire truck challenge, determining the best fire truck in the Thuthuka Forestry fleet, as well as a fire-fighting competition (during which different proto teams had to extinguish a fire inside a nearby compartment) was also hosted. Watching the scrutinising judges determining the winning fire truck, made one realise that nothing less than perfect is accepted when fighting monstrous fires. Congratulations to the team of Thuthuka, Derby – the proto team competition winners.
Demonstrations of mechanical and aerial fire-fighting as a complement to on-theground fire-fighters were also done. An interesting demonstration with dogs was simultaneously scary and awesome. One would simply not want to mess with these beautiful, clever dogs, but they are worth their weight in gold when it comes to detecting fires or catching arsonists. Every year this fire open day confirms and lets one rest assured, that in the Mkhondo area, all the fire- fighting teams are ready for the upcoming fire season. We salute you all.
