Four Vryheid cyclists and our local cyclist, Rudolf Pretorius, competed in this year’s Trans Drak Challenge of 204 km and 24 hours with a total accent of 3 300m.
A mixed team, Zauco van den Berg, Sandra Haywood and Riaan Swanepoel; and a men’s team: Willem Richter and Rudolf Pretorius, took on this grueling challenge this year. Traversing untouched mountain trails and single tracks, they crossed the Drakensberg mountains in a truly endurance event. Our mixed team did really well up to 65 km where Zauco had a terrible fall in which he had to withdraw from the race.
His teammates, Riaan and Sandra waited an hour with him until he had been stabilized by a medical team and taken to hospital. Thereafter they decided to continue without him. . . They caught up with the other mixed teams and actually managed to finish ahead of them. Congratualations on your excellent ride Riaan and Sandra. They later learned that Zauco had bruised 4 ribs and that the huge gash on his head required 10 stitches. Get well soon buddy.
