Educated at Merchiston Prep, Newcastle High and Natal University, Alec Hogg (56) is a media entrepreneur, writer and broadcaster.

After a career working for major media groups (SABC, Times Media, Independent) and two years as a member of the Group Executive at ABSA, he founded internet publishing pioneer Moneyweb Holdings in 1997 from a room above his garage. The company’s shares have been listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange since 1999. After 15 years of developing the business, Hogg left Moneyweb in October 2012 and eight months later founded, the fastest growing major website in South Africa with its unique visitors topping 600 000 in December.

Winner of the overall Sanlam Financial Journalist of the Year award at age 23, he was honoured by the competition’s judges 30 years later when presented with the lifetime achievement award for creating Moneyweb and introducing business radio to SA. Alec Hogg reads voraciously and travels widely including his annual participation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland (13 times) and attending Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway AGM in Omaha, USA (8 times). The latter provided the inspiration for his new book, How to Invest Like Warren Buffett, which has been available in South African bookstores and globally through Amazon. com since February 2016.
