I wouldn’t have paid Eskom either

Dear Editor. All things considered I don’t think I would have paid Eskom either, if I were Mkhondo Municipality.

Not that I’m letting the municipality off the hook mind you, but as an informed consumer, I don’t see why I have to pay for Eskom services that haven’t been rendered. Here’s what I mean. A few years ago every time we had a storm over Jericho Dam, residents in Amsterdam would know that would mean no electricity.

Now, if I’m not mistaken just before our last election, Eskom assured residents that they had repaired that weakness and that we wouldn’t be having anymore storm related outages. Given the amount of empty promises that come from officials’ mouths, I should not be surprised when their assurances turn out to be as “vrot” as their roads! Even now with the first crack of thunder, the lights flicker. Come the second crack of thunder and we have no lights for hours. So what happened to that repair then?

Eskom have done really well in deflecting who the real villain in the saga is by blaming the municipality, when in fact it is them who are the bad guys! Mr Molefe, I wouldn’t pay you either if you hadn’t done your job properly. I don’t know of any decent business that would pay for something they haven’t received. In the meantime, it is us poor saps caught in the middle, paying our rates, who suffer.

Yours sincerely, Cynthia Richardson
