Mall@Mfula Now a Reality

An enclosed mall, the Mall@Mfula (“mfula being isiZulu for “river”) is being built with A-grade finishes.

During 2015 many rumours were heard about a new mall for Piet Retief/Mkhondo such as, “Did you hear, ‘they’ have bought all the houses in the block between the Police station and Zuidend Street for a new mall?” In the Excelsior News of 20 November it was reported that the testing grounds had been closed and that the development of a new site for the latter had been started in Gerard Böhmer Road. Great was the excitement when demolishing and excavation activities were noticed at the old testing grounds and the idea of a new mall became more of a reality. Some residents were of the opinion that they couldn’t wait and others were rather sceptic – why would a mall be developed in this area and will we have proper shops?

According to the developers, Anaprop Property Management (www.anaprop.co.za), Piet Retief was, however, identified for the development of the mall because the town lacks some of the national retail brands and does not currently have an enclosed mall. A Fernridge ™ market research report was conducted which justified and proposed a first phase development of +/- 25 000m² (of which +/- 17 500m² will be developed initially, with the view to expand further at some time in the future). The developers say: “Such facilities are rare in the surrounding areas and will enhance the quality of life for the local community.

We aim to inspire a sense of pride and theme the mall so that local residents can relate to the space. Sufficient security measures will be taken to provide a safe environment. Taxi drop-offs etc. will be designed together with the relevant taxi and transport associations, companies etc. The facilities will cater for all genders, age groups and the disabled. There will be sufficient parking provided as per Council requirements”. The anchor tenant is Shoprite. Other confirmed major national and semi-national tenants include various ATM’s, Beaver Canoe, Capitec, Exact, Foschini, Markhams, Signature Cosmetics, Sports Scene, Sterns, The Fix, Total Sports, Vodacom and Woolworths.

More brands will be advertised on the site as construction progresses. Anaprop fully anticipate being 100% let by the opening date which is scheduled for December 2016. A percentage of rentable space will be available for local businesses as well. Interested retailers should contact the developers. Anaprop and Acsion Ltd, the owner (www.acsionsa.co.za) and a listed company on the JSE, are optimistic that the Mall@Mfula will have positive outcomes for the town and are excited to be a part of the Piet Retief community. We look forward to shopping at Mall@Mfula in 2017.
