Sabelo Soko, born and bred in Piet Retief, has now been nominated in the category of Best Poet in the SATMA awards.
Just like many of the children in the Thandukukhanya Township, his educational life began at Qhubekani Primary School and then later in life he moved to Johannesburg to embark in performing arts studies. During this time, he started his own company dubbed Mpumalanga Made Me (M.M.M) where he was initially designing and selling t-shirts. However, this company has since grown and become what he says is “a movement” that nurtures the talents of young people in the performing and creative arts. Sabelo is a storyteller, poet and a voice over artist and has recently released his album titled 2380, which saw him being nominated for the SATMA awards.
During an interview with this multi-talented young man, he said that the inspiration behind his choice of the album name was that everything about the album’s content reminded him of home (as we all know that 2380 is the postal code of Piet Retief). He has worked with the hip-hop group called Teargas and has been performing around South Africa and even across the SADEC region countries.
On his award nominated album, he worked with Maraza, Sifiso Mkhwanazi and Vangi just to mention a few. He is now working on his next mixtape project where he hopes to feature poets from around Mpumalanga. Congratulations to Sabelo for being nominated, the community of Piet Retief is behind him all the way.
