The undermentioned accidents occurred between 1 – 6 August, on roads surrounding Mkhondo, as supplied by the Mkhondo Fire and Rescue Unit.
1 August, 17:30: Three passengers sustained injuries after an accident on the Amsterdam Road. The accident report states that one of the vehicle’s tyres came loose, which resulted in the driver losing control and overturning the vehicle.
At around, 23:20, on the abovementioned date, a semi head-on collision, involving a black Porsche and a white Renault led to the death of the Renault’s driver. It is not clear as to what the cause of this accident was and three passengers, who travelled in the Porsche, also sustained light injuries.
The driver of the Renault was travelling towards Paulpietersburg and collided with the Porsche, which was en route to Piet Retief. 3 August, 20:30: A minor accident occurred on the Mahamba Road between a Toyota Quantum minibus and a heavy motor vehicle.
The driver of the Quantum was travelling towards Piet Retief and passed a truck, which was heading towards Mahamba. The two vehicles connected each other on the side and the truck drove away, leaving the accident scene. No injuries were sustained during this accident.
On the same date, at 23:00, the driver of a Toyota bakkie collided into a stationary trailer on the Lüneburg Road. Apparently, the driver was en route to eNtombe when the accident occurred.
The trailer was fully loaded with sand and was left abandoned in the road, without any lights or an emergency triangle. The driver of the Toyota sustained serious injuries. 4 August, at around midday: The driver of a Kia bakkie missed the turn-off for Kempville on the Pongola Road and ended up in a ditch next to the road.
The cause of the accident is unclear but three passengers sustained injuries as a result. 6 August, 16:20: A green VW Golf ended up in the stream, below the bridge in Retief Street, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
According to the report, the driver was travelling from west to east when he lost control and went over the bridge’s barriers. The driver was the only person in the vehicle and he sustained light injuries. Obey the rules of the road at all times, drive cautiously, do not speed and be observant – arrive alive!
