After a child was hit by a speeding Quantum in Sgodipola, the children in the area wanted action to be taken for their safety.
They applied to the Mkhondo Municipality for speed humps to be added, but after three weeks had expired, still nothing had been done. The children then decided to take action themselves and built their own speed hump in the street. They did not have the proper materials and tools, so only a soil hump was added. This did slow down traffic, but the hump was washed away when it rained. Recently they tried to improve on their previous effort.
They called on Sifiso Mkhalipi (from the Mkhondo Emergency Services) who stays in the same area, for assistance. With the help of S i- fiso, the children then rebuilt their speed hump with soil but with stones added for reinforcement. They hope to ensure safety for their fellow Sgodipola children in this way, slowing down traffic that poses a hazard to children who have to cross the road. Although the children’s action slows down the traffic, they know it is only temporary and they hope that the Mkhondo Municipality will soon make a plan to add one or more permanent speed humps in the area.
