The Harley Davidson Owners Group – HOG Big Five, Chapter #8066, visited Piet Retief on Saturday, 9 April.
A so-called One Nighter rally was undertaken by the HOG Big Five to Piet Retief as an occasion to share the members’ love and passion for the Harley brand. After their trip here from the Lowveld, they gathered at the Tuscarora Spur for lunch and fellowship. The evening was spent with more camaraderie and fun with a well-deserved rest for all at two local guesthouses: LA and Bel Air. The name of the Chapter, BIG FIVE, came from the name of the BIG FIVE Harley-Davidson Dealership.
The name Big Five was adopted after considering its significance to the area, nationally and internationally. The Chapter has grown into a wellknown name in the country, and has undertaken One Nighter Rallies, attended other National Rallies across the country and has been and still is involved in raising funds for various charities, ride-ins, old age institutions, the SPCA and the like. The main and flagship event on the Rally calendar of Big Five is its yearly rally to Magoebaskloof, near the mountain hamlet of Haenertsburg, during the first weekend in November every year where vast amounts are raised and, in collaboration with the Rotary club of Haenertsburg, handed to a welldeserved charity in the area. The Chapter is run as a non-profit organisation, is a family oriented motorcycle club and holds the name of Harley-Davidson in high esteem, being representative of this world-wide and well-known brand of motorcycle.
Says current director Oskar Rottcher, “We, the owners of these motorcycles, known just as Harleys, are ordinary people, who have saved up through the years to be able to own one of these illustrious motorcycles. No matter where we meet another Harley rider, our passion, and our love for the brand, makes us immediate friends. We are from all walks of life, doctors, engineers, business owners, rich and not so rich, florists, MD’s of companies, bank managers, pub owners, restaurant owners, but all of us just ordinary people with a passion.” Not being an owner, lets one almost stare in awe when seeing a somewhat thirteen of these beautiful cycles parked alongside one another. Enjoy your rallies, HOG Big Five, and thanks for visiting our beautiful town. May you long to soon be back here again.
