Astro Quiz Competition Now in the National Stages. This competition, funded by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement and sponsored by a few other stakeholders, has been going on for months now.
The 3rd and 4th rounds of the competition were held at Anglo American Science Centre in Witbank (eMalahleni) on the 28th of August 2015. Eight schools that were selected in the previous rounds held at the Mondi Science Centre represented the Gert Sibande District, 5 of which were from Piet Retief.
These schools, Maranatha Primary School, Harmony Park Combined, Piet Retief Primary, Nqobile Primary and Piet Retief Combined went to Witbank to compete with 11 other schools in Mpumalanga, battling for the 1st position. It was a relatively tough competition as only one school out of the 16 was to be selected to represent Mpumalanga Province at the National finals. The overall winners in Mpumalanga on the day were Maranatha Primary School from Piet Retief, with the 1st runner-up being Harmony Park Combined and the 2nd runner-up being Piet Retief Primary. In October Maranatha Primary School will go to Pretoria for the National finals to represent the Mpumalanga Province.
These learners will have an opportunity to spend two nights in one of the best hotels in Pretoria as they partake in the competition. In a press release, Mondi Science Centre expressed that they would like to kindly extend words of gratitude to all the schools which represented the centre as well as the Gert Sibande District and Mkhondo Local Municipality at the Regional Level. They also forward their best wishes to these young future astronomers. They further went on to say that they appeal to the community to contact the Maranatha Primary School and offer support and donations towards the preparations prior to the competition. Congratulations to all the schools that participated and thank you for your exceptional sportsmanship.
